What we collect, what we don't.

Short version: the research dashboards run in your browser using DuckDB-WASM. Your queries never leave your machine. We do count page views and watch heatmaps so we can improve the site, and we respect your browser's privacy signals.

  • No user accounts, no comments, nothing to sign in to.
  • We use Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, and Sentry for site metrics and error tracking. All three are skipped if your browser sends Global Privacy Control.
  • We do not sell data to anyone.
  • Email sent to addresses on this domain is hosted by Microsoft 365.

Research dashboards run in your browser

The dashboards on this site load published research datasets as Parquet files and query them locally using DuckDB-WASM. Your filter selections, group-bys, and time ranges are evaluated in your browser. Nothing about your dashboard interactions is sent to a server.

The Parquet files themselves are cached on Cloudflare's CDN. Fetching them looks identical to fetching any other static file.

What the site collects automatically

Three small services run in the background on every page.

  • Google Analytics 4: counts page views and traffic sources. Aggregate numbers only.
  • Microsoft Clarity: heatmaps and anonymized session replays so we can see where the layout confuses people. Text in any input fields is masked by default.
  • Sentry: JavaScript error reports. Only fires when something on the page actually breaks.

If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, all three are skipped (see "Your privacy controls" below).

Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity set first-party cookies for the services described above. No other cookies are set on this site.

Cloudflare CDN and security

The site is served through Cloudflare's content delivery network. Cloudflare receives basic request metadata (URL, IP address, user agent, timing) for routing, performance, and abuse prevention. This is unavoidable for any modern web property using a CDN. Cloudflare may retain these access logs for security and operational purposes. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

What we don't do

  • No ad networks, no remarketing pixels, no Meta Pixel.
  • No sale of any data. Not to brokers, not to anyone.
  • No social media widgets that phone home.
  • No accounts, no logins, nothing requiring you to identify yourself.
  • No tracking across other sites.

Email

Email sent to addresses on gaitherresearch.org is delivered to a mailbox hosted by Microsoft 365. Microsoft's data handling practices are governed by their Privacy Statement. We do not run a separate email-tracking pixel or third-party email-marketing platform.

External links and embeds

Pages on this site link out to source datasets and other research organizations. When you click an external link, the destination has its own privacy policy. Our research dashboards may load JavaScript libraries (Plotly.js, D3.js) from public CDNs (jsdelivr.net, cloudflare.com). These CDNs see the fetch but do not receive any personal data from us.

Third parties

Your privacy controls

We don't show a cookie banner. The page reads your browser's Global Privacy Control signal. If your browser sends it, we automatically skip Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, and Sentry.

Global Privacy Control is on by default in Firefox, Brave, and DuckDuckGo. For Chrome, Safari, or Edge, the EFF Privacy Badger extension turns it on.

Children

This site is intended for an adult research audience and is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

If we change what this site collects, the "Last updated" date at the top will change. Material changes will also be visible in the site's GitHub repository commit history.
